El Ixtépete, Archaeological site in Tlaquepaque, Mexico
El Ixtépete is an archaeological site in Tlaquepaque featuring a prominent pyramid structure with a base of about 44 meters and rising approximately 6 meters high. The complex contains several stone structures that were expanded and rebuilt across different time periods.
The settlement developed between 400 and 900 CE, when the region was an important center of Mesoamerican life. Over these centuries, the community flourished before eventually being abandoned, leaving behind only its stone remains.
The structures show connections to Teotihuacan building methods, particularly visible in the distinctive stepped and panel forms of the pyramid. These design elements tell of ancient trade relationships and cultural exchange between different Mesoamerican groups.
The site is open to visitors who can explore the three main structures and get a sense of the ancient architecture. It is advisable to wear sturdy shoes and protect yourself from sun and heat, as there is little shade available.
During certain astronomical events, particularly around the spring equinox, people gather at this location to hold traditional ceremonies. These gatherings show how visitors today still seek a spiritual connection to the ancient structures.
