Van Nuys, Residential neighborhood in San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, United States.
Van Nuys is a residential neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles that covers a large area with single-family houses, apartment buildings, and commercial streets. The central sections show a typical mix of low-rise buildings and wide streets with storefronts and small shopping plazas.
The Suburban Homes Company laid the foundation for the neighborhood in 1911 by purchasing around 19,000 hectares of land for planned residential settlements. In the following decades the area grew rapidly through the construction of new homes and the expansion of transport links.
The name honors Isaac Newton Van Nuys, an early investor and land developer who shaped the area. Today the neighborhood feels like a typical example of San Fernando Valley sprawl, where residential streets and commercial strips flow into one another.
The Metro G Line connects the neighborhood with downtown and other parts of the valley, while the Metrolink station offers regional train services. Most shops and services are located along the main streets, which are easy to reach by car or bus.
Within the neighborhood sits a large general aviation airport that handles hundreds of takeoffs and landings by private planes and helicopters each day. Visitors can watch smaller aircraft land and depart from the fence along the short runways.
