Chateau Marmont, Celebrity hotel in West Hollywood, United States
Chateau Marmont is a seven-story, L-shaped hotel at 8221 Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, completed in 1929 and modeled on the Château d'Amboise. Its white facade has rows of rectangular windows, balconies linked by an external zigzag metal staircase, and a steep roof with green and brown shingles, dormer windows, tall white chimneys and a central octagonal tower. The grounds hold 63 rooms, suites, cottages and four bungalows.
Fred Horowitz developed the property in 1927 as an apartment building, drawing inspiration from the Château d'Amboise in the Loire Valley. In the following years it was converted into a hotel, which opened in 1929.
The hotel takes its name from Marmont Lane, the small street it faces, after Chateau Sunset and Chateau Hollywood were rejected. Harry Cohn of Columbia Pictures told young actors Glenn Ford and William Holden, "If you must get into trouble, do it at the Chateau Marmont"; the line now appears on candle boxes sold at the hotel.
The building is located at 8221 Sunset Boulevard and offers a restaurant as well as concierge services for guests. Accommodations are available for both short stays and extended periods.
The earthquake-resistant design has protected the building through multiple seismic events and preserved its original architecture since 1929. This construction method was advanced for its time in California.
