What began as a Citrus Experiment Station in 1907 received full University of California campus status in 1954. The founding followed the need for agricultural research in Southern California during the early development of citrus cultivation.
The university enrolls more than 26,000 students from different backgrounds who participate in numerous campus organizations and academic programs.
The campus sits in the eastern part of Riverside and can be reached via Interstate 215 and California State Route 60. Wide pedestrian paths connect the different academic buildings and residence halls across the grounds.
The botanical garden on campus holds over 3,500 plant species from around the world, including rare cacti and Mediterranean plants. The collection began with the original agricultural trial plantings and evolved into a publicly accessible garden.
