Auto Safari Chapin, Drive-through safari park in Taxisco, Guatemala
Auto Safari Chapin is a drive-through safari park in Taxisco, in the south of Guatemala, where visitors tour the grounds by car and observe animals moving freely in open enclosures. The park also includes a boat ride section where animals live on separate artificial islands surrounded by water.
The park opened in 1980 and brought the drive-through safari format to Guatemala for the first time. It was one of the earliest places in Central America where people could watch animals from their own vehicle rather than from behind traditional fences.
The park draws families from across Guatemala who come to see animals in open spaces from inside their cars, which feels different from a traditional zoo visit. Many visitors treat the outing as a full day trip, bringing food and spending hours on the grounds.
Morning is generally the best time to visit, as animals tend to be more active and the heat is more manageable in the southern lowlands. Plan for a full day since the car route and the boat section each take considerable time to complete.
The boat ride takes visitors past islands where large animals can be seen from water level, offering a perspective that is rarely available in parks of this type. This two-format layout, car and boat in one visit, is uncommon for the region.
