Chiapa de Corzo

Chiapa de Corzo, Archaeological site in Chiapas, Mexico

Chiapa de Corzo is a town in Chiapas, Mexico, situated in the Grijalva River valley and surrounded by mountains. The central plaza displays colonial-era buildings, and the town sits at about 407 meters (1,335 feet) above sea level.

Spanish colonizers established their first Chiapas settlement here in 1528. They constructed notable structures, including the Santo Domingo Church, which houses Mexico's largest bells.

The annual Fiesta Grande de Enero fills the streets with traditional dances recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. You can see locals wearing colorful costumes and performing movements that families have passed down through generations.

The town offers multiple areas to explore, including archaeological excavation zones and river access for Sumidero Canyon tours. It helps to wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for varying paths and terrain.

Archaeologists discovered a 2,700-year-old pyramidal tomb in Mound 11. This structure stands as the earliest of its kind ever found in Mesoamerica.
