Lacandon Jungle, Tropical rainforest region in Chiapas, Mexico.
The Lacandon Jungle extends across 1.8 million hectares in eastern Chiapas, containing 3,400 plant species and thousands of animal species within its boundaries.
The indigenous Lacandon Maya retreated into this forest during Spanish colonization, maintaining their isolation until the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The remaining Lacandon people, numbering less than 1,000 individuals, continue their traditional practices through agriculture, hunting, and environmental protection initiatives.
Visitors can access the jungle through Tuxtla Gutierrez, with November to February offering more moderate temperatures for exploration and activities.
Within the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve, travelers encounter jaguars, scarlet macaws, and over 625 butterfly species in their natural environment.
