Manglares Cayapas-Mataje Ecological Reserve

The protected area spans 513 square kilometers of mangrove forests along the Pacific coast, reaching heights of up to 60 meters.

Established on October 26, 1995, the reserve gained international recognition in 2002 when it was designated as a Ramsar wetland site.

Local communities maintain traditional fishing practices in the nutrient-rich waters, contributing to the preservation of ancestral knowledge within the reserve.

Visitors can access the reserve through San Lorenzo or Borbon by road, with guided boat tours offering the most comprehensive exploration opportunities.

The reserve contains the tallest mangrove forest in the world near Majagual, supporting five distinct mangrove species in its ecosystem.
