Imbabura UNESCO Global Geopark, UNESCO Global Geopark in Imbabura Province, Ecuador.

Imbabura UNESCO Global Geopark spans volcanic formations, lakes, and diverse ecosystems across the Imbabura Province with over 50 geological sites distributed throughout the region. The landscape displays the geological history of the Andes through active and extinct volcanoes, crater lakes, and rock layers from different time periods.

The geopark was officially recognized in 2019 as Ecuador's first UNESCO Global Geopark following years of scientific documentation and planning. This recognition was based on the geological structures' importance for understanding the volcanic history of the Andes.

The region is home to several indigenous communities such as the Otavalos and Kayambis, who speak their own languages and practice traditional crafts like weaving and ceramics in daily life. Visitors can experience these living traditions firsthand in local markets and villages.

Visitors can explore geological formations on marked trails or participate in guided tours to better understand the sites. It is recommended to wear sturdy footwear and be aware of the altitude, as most locations are situated in mountain regions.

Lake Cuicocha sits within an active volcanic crater and contains two small islands that can be explored by boat, offering rare habitats for bird species. These islands serve as protected areas and provide research opportunities for studying volcanic activity in the region.
