Serranía de Chiribiquete, Mountain range in Colombian Amazon.
Serranía de Chiribiquete is a mountain range in the Colombian Amazon with plateau-like formations and sheer cliff faces that rise prominently above the surrounding rainforest. The range spans across two large departments and covers a vast protected area dedicated to conservation.
The area became a national park in 1989 to protect its natural resources and cultural heritage. The park has been expanded several times since then to safeguard additional forest and wilderness areas.
Indigenous groups left rock art across the cliff faces and shelters, creating marks that tell stories of their presence and beliefs. These artistic traces remain visible throughout the site and connect visitors to the spiritual life of the people who lived here.
Access requires special permits and can only be arranged through authorized guides experienced in jungle expeditions. Visitors should expect challenging travel conditions and plan visits well in advance with local operators.
The park is home to animal and plant species found nowhere else in the world, with scientists regularly discovering new life forms. The combination of highland plateau and rainforest creates ecosystems that exist in very few other places on Earth.
