Volcán, Mountain town in Chiriquí Province, Panama.
Volcán is a mountain town in Chiriquí Province situated at about 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) elevation. The community sits in fertile terrain shaped by ancient lava flows from Volcán Barú and is today marked by extensive farmland and pastures.
The settlement grew on lava flows from Volcán Barú, which created nutrient-rich soil and attracted farmers throughout the twentieth century. This geological foundation allowed it to become an important agricultural area.
The community depends on farming and grows vegetables, flowers, and raises dairy cattle, which shapes daily routines and local pride. You see fields and small farms everywhere, worked by families who have done this for generations.
The weather is dry from December through March and wet the rest of the year; the dry months are best for visiting. Early mornings and late afternoons are good times to walk around and see farmers at work in the fields.
The farms here produce onions, cabbage, carrots, coffee, bananas, potatoes, lettuce, corn, tomatoes, and cut flowers in remarkable variety. This wide range of crops is unusual for such a small mountain area and shows the adaptability of local farmers.
