Lake Xochimilco, Natural lake in southern Mexico City, Mexico
Lake Xochimilco consists of a network of canals and waterways extending through the southern part of Mexico City across 125 square kilometers.
The lake formed part of an extensive water system during the last glacial period, connecting with Lake Texcoco until the Aztecs built causeways in the 14th century.
The lake supports traditional chinampa agriculture, a method using artificial islands created with stakes and reed mats to produce multiple annual harvests.
The remaining canals offer boat tours on trajineras through the waterways, allowing visitors to experience agricultural practices and observe local fauna.
Lake Xochimilco contains the final natural habitat of axolotls, critically endangered salamanders native to this specific aquatic environment.
