Xalapa

Xalapa is the capital of Veracruz in the eastern mountains of Mexico, sitting 1,460 meters above sea level. Dense vegetation and surrounding mountains create a mild climate throughout the year with frequent fog and drizzle.

The Spanish colonial settlement received villa status in 1791 and developed into an important regional center. Its position between the coastal ports and the highlands made it a trading hub during the colonial period.

The Museum of Anthropology displays pre-Hispanic artifacts, particularly from the Olmec culture of the Gulf Coast region. The collection offers a direct view of the artistic traditions and ritual objects from these early societies.

The city connects to larger destinations through a road network, with regular bus services running from the central terminal. Because of the frequent fog and rain, bring waterproof clothing, especially during morning and evening hours.

The name Xalapa comes from Nahuatl and means spring in the sand, reflecting the natural water sources in the area. Jalapa plants once grew in the region, whose roots were used in traditional medicine and gave the city its name.
