Villahermosa, Capital city in southeastern Mexico
Villahermosa is the capital of Tabasco state in southeastern Mexico, located between the Grijalva and Carrizal rivers in a region with a tropical climate. The city spreads across flat terrain about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the Gulf of Mexico at an elevation of 11 meters (36 feet).
Spanish conqueror Diego de Quijada founded the settlement in 1564 under the name Villa Carmona. King Philip II of Spain granted it royal recognition and official status in 1598.
La Venta Park-Museum displays several Olmec basalt heads among living rainforest trees and plants. Visitors follow paths through green vegetation and see these ancient sculptures standing in a natural setting.
Carlos Rovirosa Pérez International Airport sits 15 kilometers (9 miles) south of downtown and offers regular connections to Mexico City, Cancún, and Veracruz. Temperatures remain high throughout the year with heavy rainfall between June and October.
The city serves as the energy capital of Mexico due to the petroleum industry in the region. Traditional operations still process cacao, tobacco, and tropical hardwoods from the surrounding area.
