The Community Baboon Sanctuary is a wildlife refuge along the Belize River that protects black howler monkeys and numerous other species. The protected land spans across several village areas and includes forest and riverine habitats that visitors can explore through organized outings.
The sanctuary began in the 1980s when local landowners and conservation workers joined forces to protect black howler monkeys and their forest home. Over time the initiative attracted more property owners and evolved into a larger regional conservation effort.
Local women from nearby villages lead the protection efforts and manage much of the daily work at the sanctuary. Their involvement reflects deep roots in the community and shapes how the place operates today.
The best way to experience the sanctuary is on foot using marked trails that wind through forests and along the river. Wear sturdy shoes, bring insect repellent and plenty of water, as the climate is hot and humid year-round.
The black howler monkeys are most vocal in early mornings and late evenings, when their distinctive calls echo loudly through the forest canopy. Hearing these sounds in person is an unforgettable experience that many visitors travel specifically to witness.
