Burdon Canal Nature Reserve, Protected wetland ecosystem near Belize City, Belize
The reserve contains a network of waterlogged backswamps spanning 5,255 acres, featuring mangrove forests and freshwater swamp species around Fabers Lagoon.
Established in 1992, the Burdon Canal Nature Reserve gained recognition as a strict nature reserve under IUCN category Ia protection guidelines.
The reserve functions as an educational center where researchers document and study the interactions between local communities and natural resources.
Visitors can access the reserve through guided tours departing from Belize City or Gales Point Village, with February to April offering prime bird watching opportunities.
The area experiences a distinctive gradient from saline to fresh water due to tidal influences and receives approximately 2,000 millimeters of annual rainfall.
