Loltun Cave, Prehistoric cave system in Oxkutzcab, Mexico
The cave network extends over two kilometers underground, featuring numerous chambers with natural limestone formations, stalactites, and stalagmites throughout the passages.
Archaeological excavations within the cave revealed tools, pottery, and animal bones dating back to the Pleistocene era, indicating human presence from 10,000 years ago.
The cave walls display ancient Maya artwork, including negative handprints, geometric patterns, and detailed representations of human faces and various animal species.
Guided tours depart six times daily between 9:30 AM and 4:00 PM, leading visitors through 700 meters of illuminated pathways within the cave system.
The cave contains musical columns, natural limestone formations that produce different tones when struck, creating natural instruments within the underground chamber.
