Antamina mine, Copper and zinc mine in Ancash Region, Peru
Antamina is a mining operation in the Ancash Region of Peru, situated at about 4,300 meters elevation high in the Andes Mountains. The facility extracts copper, zinc, and molybdenum from deep ore deposits using large-scale mining and processing equipment.
Construction of the facility began in 1998 and operations started in 2001 in the high Andes of Peru. The mine was developed as a joint project among several international mining companies to access the region's rich metal deposits.
Local communities near the mining site maintain ongoing discussions with operators regarding land rights, compensations, and social development programs.
The site sits in an alpine setting with extreme weather conditions and limited accessibility outside organized visitor routes. Visits are only possible with prior permission and safety equipment provided by the operator.
The ore contains different mineral zones with varying metal contents, which causes production quantities to shift significantly depending on where extraction occurs. This geological variety makes resource planning and extraction at the facility particularly complex.
