Flores Island

The 14,731 square kilometer island extends between Sumbawa and Timor, featuring a chain of mountains that divide regions with distinct languages.

Portuguese traders first reached the island in the 16th century, followed by Dutch control in 1618, with complete administration established by 1907.

The island maintains 83 percent Roman Catholic population while preserving traditional clan systems that associate with specific plants and animals.

Five administrative regencies divide the territory: Manggarai, Ngada, Ende, Sikka, and Flores Timur, with Ende functioning as the primary port.

Archaeological discoveries revealed that Homo floresiensis, an ancient human species, inhabited the island until approximately 13,000 years ago.
