Westwood

Westwood is a district on the Westside of Los Angeles that includes the University of California Los Angeles campus and mixed residential and commercial zones. The area displays Mediterranean-style architecture with tile roofs, and contains restaurants, shops, theaters, and public transportation links throughout.

The area began as ranch land and was purchased in 1919 by Arthur Letts, who started residential development with Harold Janss. These early decisions shaped its evolution into a mixed community combining housing, university, and business spaces.

Persian restaurants and shops line Westwood Boulevard, shaping the neighborhood's character over many decades. Walking through the area, visitors notice how local traditions remain woven into daily life through the food, stores, and gatherings that fill the streets.

The district is well served by public transportation and offers numerous options for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Visitors should expect the area to be active and busy, particularly in commercial zones and near the university campus.

The Hammer Museum in this area features contemporary art exhibitions displayed in a building with numerous skylights. These windows and glass courtyards flood the interior with natural daylight, creating an unusual way to view art.
