San Marcos, town in Guerrero, Mexico
San Marcos is a town in the Mexican state of Guerrero, located close to the Pacific coast south of Acapulco. Its streets, some paved and some not, are lined with simple houses and trees, with a church standing at the center of the layout.
The area was home to indigenous groups such as the Yope-Tlapaneca long before Spanish settlers arrived and established haciendas during the colonial period. The town received its current official name in 1885, honoring Saint Mark.
The church at the center of town remains the main gathering point for residents, especially during religious occasions. The chilena, a local musical style, can be heard during celebrations and reflects the mix of traditions that shaped this part of the Guerrero coast.
The town sits along the main coastal highway, making it easy to reach by car from Acapulco or other nearby coastal towns. Once there, most of the center can be covered on foot, as the streets are flat and straightforward to navigate.
Every April, a festival honoring Saint Mark draws people from surrounding towns for several days of music, dancing, and local food. Local craftspeople shape objects from clay taken directly from nearby riverbeds, a practice that has continued across many generations.
