Bahia de las Aguilas, Protected bight in Pedernales, Dominican Republic
The 8-kilometer beach on the southwestern coast features white sand bordered by limestone cliffs and transparent blue Caribbean waters.
In 1997, legal battles over land ownership resulted in the government declaring the entire area public land within Jaragua National Park.
Local fishermen from La Cueva village maintain traditional fishing methods and guide visitors through boat excursions to the beach.
Visitors need to travel 25 kilometers from Pedernales town to La Cueva, then take a boat or four-wheel drive to reach the beach.
The marine ecosystem contains untouched coral reefs and seagrass meadows where endangered sea turtles lay their eggs throughout the year.
