San Juan Province, Administrative province in the southwestern region, Dominican Republic
The largest province in the Dominican Republic spans 3,569 square kilometers of terrain, including mountains, valleys, and three major rivers at 429 meters elevation.
Established in 1938, the province originated from a Taino chiefdom territory where Nicolas de Ovando founded San Juan de la Maguana settlement in 1503.
The province maintains agricultural festivals throughout the year, celebrating harvests with traditional music, local food preparations, and community gatherings.
The region produces substantial quantities of beans, peanuts, corn, and dairy products, making it a primary food supplier for the Dominican Republic.
Three hydroelectric dams - Sabaneta, Sabana Yegua, and Palomino - generate power while contributing to the province's water management system.
