Space Mountain, Indoor roller coaster in Magic Kingdom, United States
Space Mountain is an enclosed roller coaster housed inside a white domed building at Magic Kingdom in Orange County. The track runs through complete darkness punctuated by artificial starfields, sudden curves and descents.
The ride opened in January 1975 and counted among the first completely enclosed roller coasters anywhere. It marked a turning point in theme park design by introducing the concept of a themed journey through darkness.
The name recalls postwar enthusiasm for outer space and has shaped how generations picture a journey beyond Earth. Families ride together through darkness lit by stars and futuristic projections.
Riders must be at least 44 inches (112 centimeters) tall to board and can use FastPass+ to shorten wait times on busy days. The ride takes place in total darkness, so anyone uncomfortable with tight spaces or sudden motion should consider this beforehand.
Two identical tracks run at the same time inside the dome, each following different curve combinations and tilt angles. Every track offers its own ride experience even though the basic layout stays the same.
