Lake Monroe Bridge, Steel road bridge at Lake Monroe, Florida, United States
Lake Monroe Bridge is a steel road bridge spanning the St. Johns River in central Florida, connecting Seminole and Volusia Counties. The structure features a Warren through truss design and crosses approximately 627 feet of water.
Built in 1933 during the Great Depression, this bridge replaced an earlier wooden toll structure. It became Florida's first electrically operated swing bridge.
The bridge transformation from a vital transportation link to a fishing pier reflects the evolution of infrastructure and community needs in central Florida.
The bridge is located at Lake Monroe Wayside Park and offers access to fishing opportunities along the water below. The site is easy to reach and good for a quick stop.
The bridge was equipped with machinery from the Earle Gear and Machine Company in Philadelphia, allowing it to rotate 360 degrees. This rotating system used curved rack and spur gears, an impressive engineering achievement for the era.
