Cassadaga, Spiritualist community in Volusia County, Florida.
Cassadaga is a spiritualist community in Volusia County, Florida, comprising around 55 buildings on wooded lots connected by unpaved lanes. The settlement includes simple wood-frame houses from the late 1800s style, a small bookshop, a hotel and several meeting spaces for public events.
George Colby founded the settlement in 1894 after traveling to this part of northern Florida to establish a location for spiritualist meetings. The association received an official charter in 1895 and developed into a permanent residence for mediums and their followers.
The name comes from a similar location in New York State and means "water beneath the rocks" in the Seneca language. Visitors see homes with signs offering palm reading, card reading and mediumship sessions, while residents regularly hold healing circles and spiritual gatherings.
Most pathways are walkable and visitors can move freely between public buildings and garden areas. Appointments for private sessions are arranged directly with individual practitioners who display their availability on signs outside their homes.
An old cemetery at the edge of the settlement holds graves of founding members and early residents from over a century ago. Some visitors report sudden temperature drops or the sensation of a presence when walking through certain areas beneath the old oak trees.
