Barnett National Bank Building, Chicago School skyscraper in downtown Jacksonville, US
The Barnett National Bank Building is a Chicago School skyscraper in downtown Jacksonville stretching 18 floors with large windows and structured facades that emphasize vertical lines. Today the structure houses 107 residential units, commercial offices, a coffee shop, and a Chase Bank branch.
Architects Mowbray and Uffinger designed this structure in 1926 as the headquarters for Barnett National Bank, making it Jacksonville's tallest building until 1954. The building rose during a period of economic expansion in the city after years of recovery.
The building represents Jacksonville's economic growth during the 1920s and now houses the University of North Florida Center for Entrepreneurship. It stands as a visible reminder of the financial strength the city rebuilt after major setbacks.
The building sits centrally in downtown Jacksonville at West Adams Street and is easy to reach. As a mixed-use development with residences and offices, it remains active throughout the day, and visitors can explore the interior or simply admire the facade from outside.
The building was the only bank structure to survive the Great Fire of 1901, which destroyed most of Jacksonville's historic downtown. This resilience makes it a symbol of a city that recovered from a devastating catastrophe.
