The Carling

The Carling is a 13-story skyscraper in downtown Jacksonville constructed with Indiana limestone, red brick, and decorative terra-cotta elements across its facade. The ground floor features a commercial arcade, while the upper floors now serve as residential apartments.

The building opened in 1925 as a luxury hotel serving guests for decades. A major fire in 1963 forced the hotel to close, and the structure was later extensively renovated and converted into residential apartments.

The building displays Italian Renaissance design features that reflected expectations for upscale architecture during the 1920s. Visitors can see how these design principles remained intact even after the conversion to residential use.

The building sits within a downtown block surrounded by other structures rather than at a street corner. Visitors can view the exterior architecture from multiple angles and experience different perspectives of the facade.
