Tech Tower, Romanesque Revival office building in Atlanta, Georgia
Tech Tower is a seven-story office building on the Georgia Tech campus featuring red brick walls trimmed with granite. The structure occupies a central position on the grounds and displays the classic Romanesque Revival architecture from the late 1800s.
The tower was built in 1887 by architects Bruce & Morgan and served as the first academic building of the Georgia Institute of Technology. The structure has shaped the campus's development over more than a century and remains a key landmark in the institution's history.
The illuminated TECH signs on the tower originated from a tradition started by the class of 1922 to show school spirit. Visitors can still see these glowing letters today, and they have become a recognized symbol across the campus.
The building sits on North Avenue NW in Midtown Atlanta and houses administrative offices. Visitors can walk by during regular business hours to view the exterior and the illuminated signs from the street.
President Theodore Roosevelt delivered a speech on the tower's steps in 1905 emphasizing the importance of engineering education. This historical moment shows how the building served as a gathering place for significant academic and political events.
