Baltimore Block, Brick rowhouses in SoNo district, Atlanta, United States
The Baltimore Block is a row of eight connected three-story brick houses with decorated front porches, detailed window work, and strong cornices running across the front. The buildings form one continuous structure that fills the entire block.
Jacob J Rosenthal from Baltimore built these rowhouses in 1885, bringing an architectural style to Atlanta that looked quite different from typical local homes. This construction date marks when this particular building style arrived in the city.
The buildings show how residential spaces transformed into offices over time. You can still see the marks of home life in the way the rooms and floors are laid out.
The rowhouses are located within walking distance of downtown Atlanta's business and shopping areas. You can easily visit them while exploring other nearby attractions in the central part of the city.
These are the only Baltimore-style brick rowhouses in Atlanta, featuring a single continuous front and an unbroken cornice line across all eight units. This particular building approach was unusual for the city and makes them stand out architecturally.
