Academy of Medicine, Medical heritage building at West Peachtree Street, Atlanta, United States.
The Academy of Medicine is a neoclassical building in Atlanta with Doric columns, black and white Italian marble floors, and a central rotunda topped by a domed ceiling. The structure displays refined architectural design with carefully planned spaces throughout.
The building was constructed in 1941 by architects Hentz, Adler & Shutze and initially housed the Medical Association of Atlanta. It transitioned to Georgia Tech ownership in the 1970s and took on new purposes.
The building keeps its original elements while serving as a teaching and event space within the Georgia Tech campus. It stands as a reminder of when doctors had their own gathering place to meet and advance their profession together.
The building houses a central auditorium with seating for around 250 people, used for events like seminars, concerts, and lectures. Visitors should know that this is an active university building and not all areas are open to the public.
The rotunda is decorated with a chandelier from Czechoslovakia that appeared in the film 'Gone with the Wind'. This historical piece remains a striking element in the space.
