Collier Heights, Historic residential district in western Atlanta, United States.
Collier Heights is a residential district in western Atlanta built starting in 1950 that filled an entire area with contemporary homes. The neighborhood contains roughly 1,750 brick ranch houses with mid-century design features, surrounded by spacious green areas and thoughtfully planned streets.
The district was founded in 1948 by African American planners and developers, growing into Atlanta's largest African American suburb by the mid-20th century. It gained national recognition in 2009 for this pioneering role in community development.
This was the first residential community planned and built by African Americans for African Americans in the region. You can see this intentional design in how the homes are arranged around shared green spaces and wide streets that encourage neighbors to gather and interact.
The area has direct access to the Hamilton E. Holmes MARTA station and the Adamsville-Collier Heights branch library for visitors' convenience. It sits approximately 25 minutes from downtown, making it relatively straightforward to reach while still maintaining a neighborhood feel.
The neighborhood was designed by Black professionals who were also shaping Atlanta itself, making it a remarkably independent and well-planned undertaking. This sets it apart from many other residential areas that developed without such professional guidance and vision from the start.
