Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary

Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, Marine sanctuary off Northern California coast, US

The Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary is a protected ocean area off the coast of Northern California that keeps many types of marine life safe from harm. It includes shallow coastal waters, deeper ocean zones, and rocky areas where different creatures find food and shelter.

The sanctuary was created in 1981 to protect the rich ocean life and wildlife along the California coast, originally called the Gulf of the Farallones. In 2015, it was enlarged and renamed to cover a larger area and include more marine habitats.

The visitor center at Crissy Field in San Francisco teaches visitors about the marine animals that live offshore and how scientists watch over the ocean ecosystem. This is where you can learn about the connection between land and sea, and how local communities depend on healthy oceans.

Visit the center in San Francisco to learn more about the sanctuary and get information about boat tours that go out on the water. Spring through fall offers the best chance to see whales and other marine animals when they are most active in these waters.

These waters are a major hunting ground for great white sharks, which gather here especially in fall when hunting seals and other prey. Scientists closely watch this shark activity as it provides important clues about ocean food chains.
