Sterling Vineyards, Winery in Calistoga, Napa Valley, United States.
Sterling Vineyards is a winery in Calistoga, Napa Valley, set on top of a hill with views over the surrounding vineyards and producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. The property is reached by an aerial gondola that carries visitors up from the base of the hill to the white hilltop buildings.
The winery was founded in 1964 and was among the first in Napa Valley to open its doors to visitors for self-guided tours. Over time it changed ownership and underwent renovations, but it kept its reputation as a place where people could explore winemaking on their own terms.
The white buildings of Sterling Vineyards were designed to recall the architecture of the Greek island of Mykonos, which gives the property an unusual look for Napa Valley. Visitors walking through the grounds notice this Mediterranean style right away, as it stands apart from most other wineries in the area.
A reservation is generally needed before visiting, especially on weekends and sunny days when the place tends to fill up. Once there, plan to spend enough time to walk around the terraces and take in the view without feeling rushed.
The towers of the winery hold eight historic bells that once hung in the London church of St. Dunstan-in-the-East, and they still ring during visits. The bells were cast in the 17th century, making them among the oldest objects on the property by a wide margin.
