Shambala Preserve

The reserve was founded in 1972 by actress Tippi Hedren, who established The Roar Foundation in 1983 to support animal protection efforts. This organizational structure helped secure long-term resources for the cats' care.

The name comes from Sanskrit and reflects the sanctuary's mission to create a place where both animals and humans experience peace. Visitors can observe how the large cats live and are cared for in this setting.

Visits require advance reservations for guided safari tours and are restricted to visitors age 18 and older. The preserve enforces strict health protocols, so guests should prepare for these requirements.

The preserve is home to two Bengal tigers, Sabu and Thriller, that once belonged to Michael Jackson and arrived after his Neverland Ranch facility closed. These animals represent an intriguing chapter in the location's story and draw particular visitor interest.
