Springville, Census-designated place in Tulare County, California.
Springville is a census-designated place in Tulare County, California, set in the foothills near Sequoia National Forest. It sits at around 1,020 feet (312 meters) above sea level and consists of a handful of roads lined with scattered houses and small local businesses.
The settlement was founded in 1860 under the name Daunt, chosen after William Daunt who ran the first store there. It was officially renamed Springville in 1911, the name it still carries today.
Springville sits at the edge of the Sierra Nevada foothills, and visitors walking through it notice a pace of life that feels tied to farming and outdoor work. The surrounding hills and open land give the place a feel that is more valley ranch than town center.
Springville lies along California State Route 190, which connects it directly to Sequoia National Forest and makes it a common stopping point for people heading into the park. A car is the most practical way to get there, as public transport options in this part of Tulare County are very limited.
A rare wildflower called Clarkia springvillensis was found near the town in 1964 and named after it. It grows in only a small area of the Sierra Nevada foothills, making the land around Springville of interest to botanists who study plants found nowhere else.
