White Mountains, Mountain range in eastern Sierra Nevada, California and Nevada, United States.

The White Mountains form a long ridge along the California-Nevada border, with peaks exceeding 14,000 feet and the highest summit reaching 14,246 feet. The landscape is marked by sparse vegetation, rocky slopes, and high-altitude terrain that feels remote and austere.

Paiute communities established summer hunting camps high in these mountains long before European settlers arrived in the mid-1800s. This early occupation reflects how people adapted to life at extreme elevations in this harsh terrain.

Research stations on these mountains study environmental changes by examining ancient bristlecone pine trees found nowhere else in such abundance. These trees serve as living records of how the climate has shifted over thousands of years.

Roads to hiking trails require four-wheel-drive vehicles to navigate safely, and the remoteness of the area demands careful planning. Visitors must bring plenty of water since natural sources are few and far between in this arid landscape.

The mountains receive less than 30 centimeters of rain annually because the Sierra Nevada creates a rain shadow blocking Pacific moisture. This extreme dryness supports rare plant species that thrive nowhere else in North America.
