Montgomery Peak, Mountain summit in White Mountains, California, US
Montgomery Peak is a mountain summit in the White Mountains of California, close to the Nevada border. The western side of the peak is defined by steep rocky walls, while the surrounding ridges drop away to an open high desert below.
The White Mountains were surveyed in the late 1800s when the California-Nevada state line was being drawn across the high terrain. Montgomery Peak came to the attention of climbers in the late 1900s as interest in the remote high peaks of this range grew.
Local climbing groups incorporate Montgomery Peak into their achievement programs, including the Las Vegas Mountaineers Club 50 Classic Peaks Challenge.
The ascent demands solid physical fitness, as the terrain gets steeper and rockier with elevation gain. There are no facilities on the mountain, so carrying enough water and food is necessary before starting out.
The summit lies directly on the California-Nevada state line, so a climber can stand with one foot in each state at the same time. This makes the spot a draw for those who enjoy the idea of being in two places at once.
