June Mountain Ski Area, Winter sports resort in Sierra Nevada, California
June Mountain Ski Area is a ski resort in the Sierra Nevada of California, spread across two connected peaks, Rainbow Mountain and June Mountain. The area has 41 trails for all ability levels, served by seven lifts including two high-speed quad chairs.
The resort operated for about 50 years before closing in 2012 after years of varying ownership and seasonal challenges. Local community efforts pushed for its return, and it reopened for the 2013 to 2014 ski season.
June Mountain is known for letting children under 12 ski and snowboard for free throughout the season, which draws many families to the slopes. On any given day, you can see groups of young kids taking their first turns alongside more experienced riders.
Winter is the main season to visit, and it is worth checking snow conditions before you go since weather in the Sierra Nevada can shift quickly. Some trails or lifts may be closed on any given day depending on recent snowfall and wind.
The mountain averages around 640 centimeters of snowfall each year, which is notably high even by Sierra Nevada standards. Cameras placed at key points on the slopes stream live images so visitors can see exact conditions before arriving.
