Devil's Gate Pass, Mountain pass in Mono County, California.
Devil's Gate Pass reaches an elevation of 2,292 meters, featuring a granitic formation west of its summit along U.S. Route 395.
John C. Fremont traversed this pass during January 1844, abandoning a cannon due to extreme weather conditions during his Nevada Basin survey.
The pass obtained its name from the Devils Gate formation, connecting to local tales of reported murders that occurred at this location.
The paved road stretches 27 kilometers from Sonora Junction to Bridgeport, marking the highest point of U.S. Route 395.
Ancient western juniper trees surrounding the pass area have existed for over 1,500 years, surviving in this high-altitude environment.
