Operation Nougat, series of 1960s US nuclear tests
Operation Nougat was a series of underground nuclear tests conducted between 1963 and 1964 at the Nevada Test Site. The tests produced subsurface explosions and left visible craters and geological changes across the test range.
Operation Nougat took place during a period when the Soviet Union and United States intensified their nuclear weapons programs. The tests marked a phase of increased underground detonations after surface testing was discontinued due to radiation concerns.
The test area is now part of a restricted military facility that is closed to the public. Information about the tests can be accessed through museums and documented records available in the region.
About 100 detonations were conducted with heavier containment measures because earlier test series had produced higher levels of radioactive gas. This increased precaution showed growing awareness of the risks involved.
