Mermaids Casino, Casino in Fremont Street Experience, Las Vegas, Nevada
Mermaids Casino was a gaming venue on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada, offering slot machines and video poker across two connected floors. The building stood at 32 East Fremont Street, close to other well-known downtown casino properties.
The venue opened in 1956 as Silver Palace and went through several name changes over the decades, including Carousel Casino and Sassy Sally's, before becoming Mermaids Casino in 1999. It was torn down in 2017, opening the way for new construction on that stretch of Fremont Street.
Mermaids Casino was known for its tropical mermaid-themed decorations and its focus on slot machines rather than table games. This kind of setup attracted casual players looking for low-stakes entertainment on Fremont Street.
The casino no longer exists, but the site sits in the heart of Fremont Street where many other venues are still active. Those interested in the history of old Las Vegas will find several surviving buildings from the same era just steps away.
Mermaids Casino was the first casino in southern Nevada to install an escalator, which was considered a novelty at the time. The land was later used to build the Circa Resort and Casino, which opened in 2020.
