Walker Lake, Endorheic lake in Mineral County, Nevada, US

Walker Lake is an endorheic lake in Mineral County that stretches roughly 17 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide along the east side of the Wassuk Range. It sits at about 1,207 meters elevation and is fed by the Walker River flowing down from the west.

The lake has shrunk by about 90 percent since the 1850s when upstream irrigation projects diverted most of the water from the Walker River that feeds it. This diversion changed the lake's ecosystem and left it with far less water than before.

The Northern Paiute people called it Agai Pah, meaning trout lake, and for generations fished here to feed their communities. This place held deep meaning in their connection to the land and waters.

Walker Lake State Recreation Area sits along the western shore and is accessible via US Route 95, offering boating, fishing, and camping activities. Most facilities and water access points are found on this western side of the lake.

Scientists regularly monitor the total dissolved solids in the water to ensure the lake remains suitable for native fish and migratory birds. This monitoring is essential because the lack of incoming water causes the lake to grow more salty over time.
