The mountain was named and mapped by Captain John C. Fremont during his 1845 expedition through the Great Basin region. Fremont was searching for viable passages through the central mountain ranges at that time.
The mountain served as a landmark for early travelers navigating the region. Climbers today leave their names in a register kept at the summit to mark their visit.
Access is via Miners Canyon using a mix of paved and unpaved roads that require careful navigation. Visitors should be prepared for changing weather conditions and varying trail quality.
The mountain is home to single-leaf pinyon pine trees that exceed 900 years in age. These ancient specimens rank among the oldest living organisms in North America.
