Enchanted Mesa, Sandstone butte in Cibola County, New Mexico
Enchanted Mesa is a sandstone butte rising from the desert floor in Cibola County with steep cliff faces and a relatively flat summit. The formation features distinct layered rock patterns and natural crevices that mark its weathered surface.
The Acoma people once lived on the summit until a severe storm destroyed the only pathway connecting them to the surrounding desert floor. This forced them to abandon the site and relocate permanently to where they live today.
Called Katzimo in the Keresan language, this mesa holds deep spiritual meaning for the Acoma people and remains central to their cultural traditions and connection to the land.
Access to the site requires permission from Acoma Pueblo authorities to respect the sacred and protected status of the location. Visitors should bring plenty of water since the area is remote and exposed, with minimal shade in the open desert.
Archaeological digs have uncovered old arrowheads, stone tools, and pottery pieces hidden within the rock crevices of the site. These discoveries reveal traces of daily life and craftsmanship from those who once lived at the summit.
