Navajo Generating Station, Decommissioned coal power plant in Coconino County, United States.
Navajo Generating Station was a coal-fired power complex in the Arizona desert near Lake Powell, consisting of industrial buildings and three tall smokestacks that dominated the landscape. The facility was built to generate large amounts of electricity for regional distribution across the southwestern states.
Construction of this facility began in the late 1960s and operations started in 1970 to supply electricity across the southwestern region. The plant ceased operations in 2019 after decades of continuous service.
The power station employment provided economic stability for numerous families from the Navajo Nation throughout its operational period of five decades.
The site is located east of Page, Arizona, in a remote desert area near the Utah border. Visitors should check in advance whether the grounds are accessible to the public before planning a visit.
The three smokestacks were demolished by controlled demolition in December 2020, marking one of the largest coal plant retirements in western America. This event symbolized the region's shift away from coal energy.
