Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling, Historical residence in Shichahai, China
This building began as a Qing Dynasty prince's mansion and later became Soong Ching-ling's home. The complex contains several main halls and pavilions arranged around courtyards, linked by winding corridors and surrounded by a traditional garden with rock formations, water features, and ancient trees.
The mansion was built during the Qing Dynasty as a residence for an imperial prince. Soong Ching-ling, widow of Sun Yat-sen and a leader in the People's Republic, moved here in 1963 and remained until her death in 1981.
The residence honors Soong Ching-ling, a central figure in modern China's development. Visitors can see how she used the rooms and gardens in her daily life through the objects and spaces left behind.
The site is easy to navigate and a walk through the grounds takes about an hour to an hour and a half. The gardens and courtyards allow visitors to experience the surroundings where daily life took place.
A hidden water system brings water from Rear Lake through an underground channel into a stream that winds through the garden below ground level. This engineering work demonstrates how residents managed natural features in the landscape.
