The property began as an imperial residence during Emperor Kangxi's reign, then became the home of Zai Tao before transforming into a university campus in 1930. The buildings were renovated at that time using modern Western construction methods while retaining traditional Chinese architectural features.
The buildings reflect a blend of Chinese design elements like glazed roofs alongside Western construction techniques, showing how different cultures coexisted during that period. Walking through the complex, visitors notice this architectural mix in the details of every structure.
The site is located near Dingfu Street and Songshu Street in Xicheng, making it easy to explore on foot since the compact layout contains all major structures in one area.
