Site of the former Fu Jen Catholic University, Historic mansion complex in Xicheng District, Beijing, China

The former Fu Jen Catholic University site is a mansion complex with a two-story main building and a three-story gate tower, along with several round houses set within the grounds. Thick outer walls of rubble brick surround the entire property, creating an enclosed compound.

The property began as an imperial residence during Emperor Kangxi's reign, then became the home of Zai Tao before transforming into a university campus in 1930. The buildings were renovated at that time using modern Western construction methods while retaining traditional Chinese architectural features.

The buildings reflect a blend of Chinese design elements like glazed roofs alongside Western construction techniques, showing how different cultures coexisted during that period. Walking through the complex, visitors notice this architectural mix in the details of every structure.

The site is located near Dingfu Street and Songshu Street in Xicheng, making it easy to explore on foot since the compact layout contains all major structures in one area. Public transport connections are convenient, and visitors should allow time to walk around the outer walls to see the complete property.

The main entrance features a white marble archway with a central cross, hinting at the religious purpose it would later serve as a university. This decorative arch blends Christian symbolism with traditional Chinese architectural style in an unusual way.
