Dagaoxuandian, Taoist temple in Xicheng District, China

Dagaoxuandian is a Ming-dynasty imperial Taoist temple on the north side of Jingshan Qian Street, measuring 57 m east-west and 264 m north-south. Its axis runs from three glazed-tile gates through the main Dagaoxuan Hall, with a double-eaved hip roof, to the two-storey Qianyuan Ge, whose round blue-tiled upper storey sits on a square yellow-tiled base.

The temple was designated as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level by the Chinese government, affirming its importance to the nation's heritage. This recognition reflects the temple's significance in Beijing's religious and cultural history.

The name changed to Dagao Yuandian under the Kangxi Emperor to avoid the character xuan in his personal name, and later to Dagao Dian. The head gate's three parallel glazed openings gave the spot the nickname Sanzuomen, still used for the street area. The rear Qianyuan Ge held a statue of the Jade Emperor.

The temple stands on the north side of Jingshan Qian Street, east of Jingshan West Street and south of Zhishanmen Street, inside the old Imperial City between Beihai and Jingshan parks. It was returned to the Palace Museum in 2010 and a full restoration began in 2015; after completion it is planned to open gradually as a public cultural square, with a digital exhibition hall in the Jiutian Wanfa Leitan and Taoist-themed exhibitions in the main hall.

The rear two-storey pavilion, Qianyuan Ge, has a round blue-tiled upper level above a square yellow-tiled lower level, Qionzhen Yu, expressing the round heaven and square earth. Its form was adapted from the Huangqiong Yu at the Temple of Heaven. The temple's archways used thick nanmu pillars sunk deep into the ground without supporting struts, giving rise to the old Beijing saying that the Dagaoxuandian archways stand with nothing to lean on.
