Shek O Quarry, Industrial quarry in Southern District, Hong Kong.
Shek O Quarry is a working stone pit spread across approximately 45 hectares on the western side of D'Aguilar Peninsula. The site extracts rock and aggregate for construction projects across Hong Kong and relies on barge transport to move materials away from the location.
The quarry opened in 1964 and began reshaping the western face of D'Aguilar Peninsula through blasting and excavation. Environmental concerns in the following decades led to stricter regulations and a restoration program starting in the 1990s to rehabilitate the landscape.
The quarry rehabilitation plan includes designated areas for peregrine falcon nesting sites along the southern boundary cliffs, preserving local wildlife populations.
The site is private property and closed to visitors due to ongoing blasting and extraction work. The cliffs can be viewed from several vantage points along nearby coastal paths, where visitors can see the outline of both former and current extraction zones.
The cliff faces provide nesting sites for peregrine falcons, fast-flying raptors that have made the rock walls their home. These birds were deliberately supported through the site's restoration efforts as part of wildlife conservation work.
